Description:

Within the last decade, advanced pharmaceutical technology has led to the development of new therapies for hepatitis C with cure rates exceeding 95%. Given the high efficacy, excellent tolerability, and improved access to hepatitis C therapies across the United States, transplanting HCV-infected organs into hepatitis C-negative recipients has become the standard of care at large transplant centers across the United States. This presentation will educate participants about the current organ shortage crisis in the United States, and how transplanting hepatitis C-positive organs may decrease the gap between organ demand and supply.

Objectives:

  • Each participant will be able to describe the organ shortage crisis in the U.S.
  • Each participant will be able to discuss characteristics of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) and clinical manifestations of acute HCV infection
  • Each participant will be able to list the three most commonly prescribed hepatitis C medications
  • Each participant will be able to summarize the risks and benefits associated with transplanting HCV+ organs

Accreditation:

The University of Colorado Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education (CPE).  This event has been accredited for up to 1.0 contact hour of knowledge-based CPE for live and home study offerings for pharmacist and pharmacy technicians.
