DEA announced that its 20th Take Back Day is scheduled for Saturday, April 24, 2021. The agency's last Take Back Day, which was held in October 2020, saw a record-high collection of expired and unused prescription medications. Americans turned in nearly 500 tons of unwanted drugs, DEA said. More than 6,800 tons of prescription drugs have been collected over the 10-year span of Take Back Day.

There has been an increase in overdose deaths during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to CDC, with more than 83,500 Americans overdosing in the 12-month period ending July 1, 2020. Although the increase in drug overdose deaths appeared to start before the pandemic, it rose significantly during the early months of the health emergency.

During the Take Back Day, DEA and its partners will collect tablets, capsules, patches, and other solid forms of prescription drugs. Liquids, syringes and other sharps, and illegal drugs will not be accepted. Vaping devices and cartridges will be accepted, as long as the lithium batteries are removed. (Read More)
